Updated Artist Profile: Bored Elon Musk

NFTs have taken off in the past two months, and more recently we’ve seen multiple $1M+ single token sales. It’s safe to say we’ve passed the moon and we’re now on Mars, which makes Bored Elon Musk’s artwork of a terraformed Mars quite fitting for these shocking times. This article is updated to include his latest works, Homeward Bound, Terrance over Albor Tholus, Dreaming of Mars, Life Will Find a Way, and Reflections of Vastitas Borealis.

In between tweets about snowmen-building Roomba snowblowers and conference call phones that automatically slide away from coworkers who speak unnecessarily loud, Bored Elon Musk has been creating NFTs and publishing them to Rarible in his “futuristic hyper-PARODY gallery.

There is a seriously skilled artist behind the Bored Elon Musk Twitter account, his romantic-impressionism-inspired images of a terraformed Mars are not only breathtaking, but they present a unique collecting opportunity, and just like his tongue-in-cheek invention ideas, they happen to be awesome.

Homeward Bound

The first image of a dog on Mars has been minted, and will live forever on the Ethereum blockchain. In Homeward Bound, a lone canine wonders through a martian desert underneath a pink sky. The vastness of open space is captured in this token minted on February 23rd, 2021, and we can see what looks like the outline of a structure in the distance.

Life Will Find a Way

Minted on February 16th, 2021, Life Will Find a Way depicts a very healthy tree flourishing along with a wide array of foliage in a successfully terraformed Mars. This token shows more plant life than any of the others in this series and we can start to get an idea of what the artist believes could eventually grow on Mars.

Terrace on Albor Tholus

For people who aren’t obsessed with our closest interplanetary neighbor, Albor Tholus is an extinct volcano on Mars. Terrace on Albor Tholus is unique in that it’s one of only a few images in this terraformed Mars series where we see a fleshed out structure on Mars, rather than landscapes.

Dreaming of Mars

With Dreaming of Mars, it’s tempting to take a leap of faith and assume that this is a healthy tree on Mars, underneath a sky adorned with pinkish clouds. Minted on February 22nd, 2021, Dreaming of Mars has a blue sky, and while there are pinkish tones, it’s more likely that this is an image of a tree on Earth which someone who happens to be thinking about Mars is simply looking at, rather than an actual tree on Mars.

Reflections of Vastitas Borealis

Vastitas Borealis, once visited by the Phoenix probe, is pictured in this token as a grand lake. Like in 25 Hours, this image shows the aquatic potential of terraforming the red planet, and inspires us to reach higher.

Terraforming Mars

Terraforming Mars is a beautiful original artwork minted on Feb 14th, 2021 showing what appears to be water trickling down a Mars landscape green with foliage. This is the latest in what seems to be a series of images of a terraformed Mars, but this is the only one where we can clearly see that it’s Mars we’re dealing with from the image, where as in 25 Hours we have to surmise what we’re looking at from the name.

Bored Elon #1

A voyage to 1958. 1 of 1

Minted on February 11th, 2021, Bored Elon #1, like the name implies, was the very first token minted by Bored Elon Musk, presenting a rare opportunity for digital art collectors. This is a piece that really embodies the personality of the Twitter account as a nostalgic collage of newspaper clippings featuring inventions.

25 Hours

Original by Bored Elon. 1 of 1

This is an original artwork by Bored Elon Musk showing off his talent. Here is another image of what appears to be a successfully terraformed Mars. While it looks like we’re just experiencing a sunset from a beach, because the name of this token is “25 Hours” we need to assume that since a day on Mars is 25 hours long, we’re actually looking at humankind’s greatest achievement in history, the successful terraforming of another planet to the extent where it’s ocean’s waves rival the beauty of Earth’s.

Cactalien Landscape

Your purchase comes with a public acknowledgement on Twitter from @BoredElonMusk

It’s hard to tell what kind of art someone will produce in the future, but terraformed alien landscapes seem to be a theme with Bored Elon Musk’s artwork. If this does turn out to be the case, then Cactalien Landscape, minted on February 12th, 2021, will have been the first of many and of significant importance to digital art collectors who appreciate his work.
